From the Principal

Welcome back to Term 2! I hope all of our families enjoyed a safe and restful school holiday break. It’s been a settled and positive start to the term, and I want to thank students for the respectful and responsible way they have returned to school. Classrooms are calm and focused, and students are engaging strongly with their learning.
Thank you to all the parents and carers who attended our parent-teacher interviews at the end of Term 1. These conversations are so valuable in building strong partnerships between home and school. We appreciate your continued support and commitment to your child’s learning journey.
Last week we held our ANZAC Day service at school, led with dignity by our student captains Emalee and Angus. It was a privilege to welcome Mr Jim Simons, former President of the Killarney RSL Sub-Branch, and Mr Geoff Farrell from the RSL to join us in remembrance. Our students demonstrated great respect throughout the ceremony and represented our school community with pride. Our value of community was evident in the many students who joined the town march and service on ANZAC Day morning. Thank you for being Killarney Strong!
After being postponed due to wet weather, our cross country event was successfully held last week. Well done to all students who participated with enthusiasm and effort—it was wonderful to see your determination on a wet, slow track and your encouragement of one another.
The majority of our Year 10 students have begun a Trade Taster Program at Warwick TAFE, attending every Thursday this term. It was fantastic to hear their positive reflections on their first day yesterday. These programs provide a valuable opportunity for students to explore future career pathways and develop hands-on skills in real-world settings. It is also a transition to Year 11 activity for many as they experience catching the school bus into Warwick.
Term 2 is shaping up to be a busy one, with a number of activities, excursions, sporting events and learning opportunities on the horizon. Thank you for continuing to return permission forms and payments promptly—this helps us with organisation and ensures all students are able to participate. Thank you also to the staff who organise and attend these events.
A reminder that as the weather turns cooler, it continues to be expected that all students follow the Dress Code and wear the correct school uniform. Trackpants and jumpers must be with the school jumper or plain navy. The school has spares if students need to borrow the correct jumper for the day. Students who attend wearing the incorrect jumper will be directed to swap their jumper for a borrowed jumper for the day. Your support in maintaining our school uniform standard is appreciated and helps foster a sense of belonging and pride.
Finally, don’t forget to follow our Facebook page for the latest reminders, updates and snapshots of school life.
Kind Regards
Ros Hibberd
From the Head of Department
We have some wonderful opportunities happening here at Killarney State School to fulfill our academic, social and wellbeing needs!
On Thursday, our Year 10 cohort headed off to TAFE for a Trade tester. Students were able to experience life as a TAFE student and explored the Trade department and subjects offered. The feedback on this experience was positive and I am sure Year 10 is looking forward to this opportunity over the coming 9 weeks.
Upcoming events include:
Do it for Dolly Day- Friday 9th of May.
Students are encouraged to wear blue and to show support for those silenced by bullying and raise awareness for the cause. Donations can be made by accessing the QR code on the poster.
Students will learn about this organisation and the work they are doing to put a stop to bullying, at our assembly next week.
Walk Safely to School Day- Friday 16th May.
Students are encouraged to join us at Pat Bush Park at 8am to then make our way to school together. We will be joined by our local QPS, pending availability on the day.
We look forward to supporting these fantastic initiatives at our school.
Kind Regards
Mrs Thomson

Year 7/8 Economics and Business
Dear Parents/Guardians of Year 7/8 students,
Welcome to Term 2!
We’re excited to start off this term with a focus on investigating and proposing alternative activity options that will enable a business ‘Misty Mountain Resort’ to achieve its objectives and future business success.
In this unit, students will continue to investigate a business issue that will enable students to:
- Describe the interdependence of consumers and producers in the market
- Explain the importance of short- and long-term planning to achieve personal, organisational and financial objectives
- Describe characteristics of entrepreneurs and successful businesses
- Identify the reasons individuals choose to work, types of work and how people derive an income
Assessment:
This term will include one assessment task:
- Week 8: Work folio
Timetable:
Students will have 1 Business and Economics lesson, scheduled on Tuesday (period 3) .
Contact:
I encourage you to reach out to me with any comments, concerns, or questions you may have throughout the term. Your cooperation and support are essential in supporting your child's learning, and I am here to assist in any way possible.
As I work part-time (Tuesday - Friday), email is the most efficient way to contact me, and I will strive to respond as promptly as possible. Phone calls are also welcomed on my scheduled work days.
I look forward to the term ahead!

Year 7/8 Maths
Dear Parents/Guardians of Year 7/8 students,
Welcome to Term 2!
We’re excited to start off Term 2 with a focus on Measurement and Space. This term is structured around developing proficiency and fluency in ‘measurement and geometric reasoning concepts’, connecting mathematics to real-life applications and critical thinking skills.
YEAR 7:
Unit: MEASUREMENT AND SPACE
In this unit, students will
- Apply knowledge of angle relationships and the sum of angles in a triangle to solve problems, giving reasons.
- Classify polygons according to their features.
- Use formulas for the areas of triangles and parallelograms and the volumes of rectangular and triangular prisms to solve problems.
- Describe the relationship between the radius, diameter and circumference of circles.
Year 7 Maths Assessment:
This term will include two assessment tasks:
- Week 4: Examination: Apply angle relationships to solve authentic problems and determine mathematical properties best suited for sorting and identifying polygons.
- Week 8: Examination: To use the formulas of area and volume to solve problems involving measurement, using appropriate metric units.
YEAR 8:
Unit: MEASUREMENT AND SPACE
In this unit, students will
- Apply the properties of quadrilaterals to solve problems.
- Use appropriate metric units when solving measurement problems involving the perimeter and area of composite shapes, and volume of right prisms.
- Use Pythagoras’ theorem to solve measurement problems involving unknown lengths of right-angle triangles.
- Use formulas to solve problems involving the area and circumference of circles.
Year 8 Maths Assessment:
This term will include two assessment tasks:
- Week 4: Examination: Apply properties of quadrilaterals to analyse and solve problems.
- Week 8: Examination: To use the formulas of circumference, perimeter, area, volume, and Pythagoras’ theorem, to solve problems involving measurement, using appropriate metric units.
Timetable:
Students will have 4 Maths lessons on Tuesday (period 2), Wednesday (period 2), Thursday (period 1) and Friday (period 2). Due to the dynamics of composite classes, students will be working more independently at times, as explicit year level content is delivered.

Year 9/10 Maths
Dear Parents/Guardians of Year 9/10 students,
Welcome to Term 2!
We’re excited to start off Term 2 with a focus on Measurement and Statistics. This term is organised into two distinct units that explore complex and diverse topics, encouraging problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
YEAR 9:
Unit: MEASUREMENT
In this unit, students will:
- Solve problems involving ratio, similarity and scale in two-dimensional situations.
- Apply Pythagoras’ theorem and use trigonometric ratios to solve problems involving right-angled triangles.
Unit: STATISTICS
In this unit, students will:
