From the Principal

Dear Parents, Carers, and Community,
The year is well and truly underway, and it has been wonderful to see our students embracing both their learning and extracurricular activities The first weeks of term have set a strong foundation for a successful year ahead.
A Successful Swimming Carnival
Our recent school swimming carnival was a fantastic day of friendly competition, team spirit, and community involvement. It was especially encouraging to see Sports Captains Dacia and Sophia, School Captains Emalee and Angus, and Year 10 students stepping up to foster house spirit and support their peers and younger students. The return of the student versus staff relay was much anticipated by students and added to the fun of the day. Mr Bell, Ms McCauley, Mrs Rowling and I came second place, so we finished the day with our egos intact!
A huge thank you to our P&C for providing a delicious BBQ, ensuring our students and spectators were well-fed throughout the day. Additionally, our Agricultural Science students grew the fresh, juicy watermelons—a refreshing treat for all on a hot summer’s day! Events like these are a testament to the positive school culture we continue to build together.
Leaders Induction Ceremony
It was with immense pride that we celebrated our 2025 student leaders at the recent Leaders Induction Ceremony. We were honoured to have James Lister, MP, as our special guest, along with many proud parents and grandparents who joined us for this important occasion. Leadership is more than just a badge—it is about serving our school community with commitment and integrity, and we are confident that this year’s leaders will do just that. Congratulations once again to all our captains and student representatives.
Sporting Success
Killarney P-10 State School has a proud history of sporting excellence, and our students have continued to shine in recent weeks. Many of our students have successfully progressed through various sporting trials and we are incredibly proud of their efforts. Best of luck to those moving on to the next level—we look forward to celebrating your achievements in future newsletters!
Looking Ahead
With so much already achieved in Term 1, I look forward to the exciting events and learning opportunities ahead. Thank you to our dedicated staff, supportive families, and wonderful students for making Killarney P-10 State School such a fantastic place to learn and grow.
Stay Safe in the Current Weather Conditions
As you’re aware, Tropical Cyclone Alfred is currently impacting parts of Queensland. Locally, we are expecting severe weather including heavy rain and flooding during the coming days. I urge all families to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. Please stay informed via official weather updates and your local ABC radio and ensure travel is only undertaken when safe to do so.
Our thoughts are with those in affected areas, and I encourage our community to look out for one another during this time. If you need any assistance or support, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the school. Over the coming weekend, we will communicate with families via the school Facebook page if needed.
Take care and stay safe.

JS Laptops
Thank you for actioning this process. There are now approximately half of the students who have opted for the take home laptop program with their devices. We realise there are some issues with connections away from the school network and we are working to resolve this as quickly as we can.
Year 8 Science
I was lucky enough to join the Year 8 class for their Science class this morning. The intent was to consolidate their learning about cells. Wow! What a great way to consolidate learning by making an edible cell … if you know any of the Year 8 students ask them about their fun learning experience.
Qkr
Thank you to the families who have downloaded and who are using the Qkr app for payments. This is now our preferred method for paying monies to reduce money coming through the office and also the time it takes for counting and banking.

2025 Leadership Ceremony

Year 5/6 team update
In English we have made it to the end of our imaginative narrative novel, ‘Rowan of Rin’. Along the way we have focused on the development of the main character Rowan and the language that the author uses to develop him as a character. We have also been building our knowledge of text specific vocabulary and how this is used to create the context of the story. Maths – we have completed our first assessment task based on content from the Number strand. We continue to work on Number while moving on to content from the Space strand. Our knowledge of Number concepts is important to work on every day. In Science we have been learning about our solar system and Earth’s place in the universe. We are now dedicating our time towards learning about contributions to our scientific knowledge and scientific innovation. We have been amazed by what a day in the life of an International Space Station astronaut is like and inspired by the first Australian woman to travel into space this week! |
Homework Thank you for your support of homework and reading. We have almost all of the class members completing and returning their weekly homework and record of reading. Please continue to encourage your child to complete homework and read daily. Reading does not have to be a task completed for homework alone. We are surrounded by opportunities to read – recipes, the cereal box at breakfast time, timetables, snippets from newspaper and magazines, catalogues... Every opportunity to read and talk about what we are reading is an opportunity to grow. We have been marking homework during class, allowing for an additional opportunity to consolidate learning. |
Inter-school sport We met with Glennie Heights State School in Week 5 for our first round of Newcombe ball and T-ball. It was a great opportunity to build social skills and positive sportsmanship. This week we will travel to Warwick to meet with students from Scots PGC College and Warwick East State School. |
NAPLAN 2025
NAPLAN test window starts on Wednesday 12 March and finishes on Monday 24 March 2025. A timetable across this period has been designed to maximise participation and minimise impact across the school during this time. Students will generally be completing tests from Wednesday 12 March, finishing on Tuesday 18 March.
Individual students who are in years 3/5/7 & 9 have been given a letter to take home to parents/carers to share information last week.
If you have specific questions or would like to discuss specific needs in regards to your child’s participation, please see your class teacher or contact Mrs Barling, and we will provide and explain the NAPLAN testing process.

P&C News

Tuckshop Convenor
The P&C is looking for a parent or member of our community who would be interested in volunteering to be our Tuckshop Convenor. The opening times/day would be the choice of the new Convenor. The menu would also be the Tuckshop Convenor's choice, in negotiation with the school to comply with Healthy Choices guidelines. Please contact the P&C for further information or to express your interest by emailing: pandc@killarness.eq.edu.au.

How to order School Uniforms
New stocks of polo shirts have arrived so we now have all sizes available. Parents may now place a uniform order via email and pay by direct deposit! We hope this will make purchasing uniforms easier. Students can come and see Mrs Diete during break times to try on uniforms if they are unsure of sizes.
